It only takes small amount of water to drown someone
Statistics - drowning is the third highest cause of accidental/ unintentional deaths in NZ
81 drownings in NZ in 2013
Did you know that there were 81 drownings in NZ last year? Statistics say that drowning is the third most common cause of unintentional deaths in New Zealand.
So it is really important that everybody in NZ can swim 200 metres to be safe.
In New Zealand no one can live further than 80kms away from water. Many people drown in ponds, rivers, lakes, streams and did you know that even creek’s can be hazardous.` If you get caught in a rip current (a flow of water pushing away from land ) you just need to go with the flow until you stop and then you need to swim back to safety.
In conclusion water safety is very important in New Zealand. So make sure you can swim that 200m to be safe.
